China to Phase Out PHS Service by 2011
February 06, 2009
China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) has issued orders for telecom operators to free up spectrum used for PHS (Personal Handyphone System) service by 2011, so as not to interfere with China's 3G TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) service, according to Xinhua News on February 4. Currently there are around 69 million PHS subscribers using the 1900-1920 MHz frequency range, which will be cleared up to avoid conflicts with China Mobile's TD-SCDMA service in the 1880-1900MHz frequency range. Operators presently running the PHS service in China include China Telecom and China Unicom, but it is projected that the termination of PHS service will have limited impact on both companies' business development.
